Fortress Monroe, Virginia 1861 Color Drawing
Also known as Fort Monroe, this fort at the tip of the Virginia Peninsula has the rare distinction of a fort in a Confederate state that was held by the Union for the entire Civil War. Confederate President Jefferson Davis was imprisoned at the Fortress after the war for two years.
