Fort McHenry, Maryland 1857 Drawing
Fort McHenry was completed in 1798 along the Chesapeake Bay and designed to protect Baltimore from ships coming up the Bay. The fort is mainly known for surviving a British bombardment on 13-14 September 1814 in which Francis Scott Key wrote a poem after witnessing the bombardment that eventually became the Star Spangled Banner.
This drawing shows Fort McHenry and the Chesapeake some years after the bombardment.
