Dien Bien Phu was the climatic battle from March to May 1954 of the First Indochina War (what Americans call the Vietnam war is also referred to as the Second Indochina War). The battle was fought in northwest Vietnam and the French defeat resulted in the withdraw of French forces from southeast Asia.
